Welcome to 1st Grade!
First grade is such a fun year with so many wonderful activities to celebrate! Research projects, reading celebrations, classroom parties and planned field trips are a few examples. The most important goal is to create a family of learners in the classroom community. Our first grade classroom is an environment where your child is a valued, trusted, and an integral part of our family of learners.
First grade is the year we learn to fine-tune many of our different skills. Students participate in Guided Reading at their individual levels allowing them to attain reading skills at their own pace. Reading for fun, as well as comprehension, is key in our classroom. We improve our writing skills through weekly spelling and vocabulary instruction. Math builds upon skills learned in kindergarten introducing new skills such as addition and subtraction, fractions, time, money, graphs, and much, much more! Each day includes prayer, chapel, and discussions that help our students understand and grow in their faith.
Weekly science, technology, guidance, health and social studies classes are included along with visits to our wonderful science and computer labs. Specials such as Art, Spanish, P.E, and Library are also part of our week that we look forward to each day!
Curriculum is teacher created and based on standards set by the Archdiocese of San Antonio and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. In addition, we use Wordly Wise 3000, Texas Go Math, Our Heavenly Father Series, Month-by-Month Phonics, Reading A-Z, and Project Wisdom texts to improve planning and instruction.
