Welcome to 5-8 English, Language Arts, and Reading!
The goal of ELAR is to recognize that reading and writing are basic skills that will lead to overall academic success and are not restricted to any one academic discipline. Students will increase understanding and recall of vocabulary and important information. Through text based and critical thinking questions, students will expand upon their comprehension to gain deeper understanding and "read between the lines". Students are encouraged to become increasingly independent and problem solvers.
Our curriculum is based on the standards set forth by the Archdiocese and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. ELA textbooks include: Wordly Wise 3000, Glencoe Grammar and Composition Handbook, Voyages in English, Texas Treasures. Online resources for reading include Commonlit.org and Readworks.org Novels studies (can change from year to year): To Kill A Mockingbird, The Outsiders, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and works by Edgar Allan Poe.
Train the young in the way they should go; even when old, they will not swerve from it. - Proverbs 22:6
